14 Best Hostels in Copenhagen (NEW 2020)

The hostels in Copenhagen might be some of the best in all of Europe.

And trust me, I know. During my 8 year tenure of traveling the world, I’ve stayed in hundreds of hostels. These hostels range from an earth-shattering, dirty $3 a night hostel in Nepal – which had a faint smell of seeped into every corner – to an unforgettable $60 a night hostel in Europe.

But on the reverse side I’ve stayed in hostels for under $10 that were fantastic; and hostels 4 times that price that would turn your stomach.

So the famous saying “You get what you pay for.” isn’t always true when talking about hostels.

For the most part, Copenhagen has excellent hostels. There are eco-friendly hostels, hostels that offer free yoga, party hostels, and budget-friendly ones as well.

So let’s look at the 14 Best Hostels in Copenhagen in 2020!

What Makes Sleep in Heaven One of the Best Hostels in Copenhagen?

What Backpackers Are Saying About Sleep in Heaven

“ This is not really a party hostel like I thought it would be. If you're looking for that I would highly recommend urban house which has a bar on the bottom. Other than that I really adored this hostel. Super aesthetic looking and cozy. They also play really good music. The bar they have is only beer and wine, v small and they also have no kitchen. They also don't have a kitchen. They didn't really have a lot of activities, but everyone was very nice.”

“Could not recommend this hostel enough for solo travellers! - Great security with key card access. - A massive board next to reception for a million cafes, activities and discount cards! - Mostly groups when I stayed in Feb, but I still met other solo travellers. - 15 min walk from metro station. - Didn’t have breakfast but I’d recommend Kaf Cafe round the corner (amazing service and pastries!) - Clean rooms and bathrooms! - Bars and restaurants near by but staff could interact more.”

Urban House Copenhagen by MEININGER

Meininger brand has a few hostels scattered around Europe in places like Vienna and Berlin. Perhaps their most ambitious hostel is Urban House in Copenhagen. Urban House Copenhagen prides itself as being a hotel/hostel hybrid

This hostel is located in downtown. It’s also has a trendy style that fits its location in vibrant Vesterbro (One of the coolest areas of the city).

Urban House also has a designated quiet room, perfect for planning your time in Copenhagen, and a movie and game room.

Lastly, the bar has local craft beer, live music, pool, and a courtyard garden.

Overall Urban House is a superb choice for those wanting to stay downtown without shelling out a ton of cash for a hotel.

The hostel dorms book out early during high season so booking in advance is smart.

What Travelers are Saying About Urban House Copenhagen by MEININGER

“It was a big and nice hostel, clean, good staff, good location, definitely value for money. The only problem is that there was just 1 bathroom (WC+shower) in a room for 10 people, sometimes we had to wait especially in the mornings.”

“Urban houses are one of the best hostels in all Europe. It’s location makes it better as compared to other hostels in Copenhagen. Facilities and cleanliness in the hostel was amazing. Would recommend to others and love to stay again in Urban House.”

“Can’t describe how amazing was my experience at Urban Camp, people are really nice, always helping with your doubts, the environment it’s amazing, feels like you are actually camping and the bar has many things to do, you can watch tv and also drink a beer, can play games or even just chill with your friends. For me it was one of the best experiences and I can’t wait to come back! I would recommend it for everyone! Very grateful!!!”

“A really nice, clean and modern hostel! The beds were super comfy and the hostel itself felt safe and comfortable. Beds have lights and plug sockets and tents have lockers. The bathroom was really big, spacious and clean with many showers. Staff were great and the hostel social area was a good place to be also. Only tiny downside (which I knew beforehand anyway) was the location! But if you’re ok to rent a bike and use transport then the main city centre is around 15 minutes away!”

Annex Copenhagen

Budget-friendly, great location, and a lively community are just a few reasons why Annex Copenhagen tops the list of best hostels.

Annex Copenhagen Located in Vesterbro

Annex Copenhagen is located in Vesterbro. And if you asked a Dane“What is Copenhagen famous for?” There’s a good chance people will mention Vesterbro. But more on that in a second.

What makes Annex Copenhagen one of the best hostels in Copenhagen?

Well, many reasons, but one is location.. location.. location. Annex Copenhagen sits in the center of Vesterbro. For those of you who don’t know, Vesterbro has been called one of the best neighborhoods in the world by numerous media outlets.

From the hostel, you can easily reach the meatpacking district, a thriving food market, and one of the most foodie-friendly areas of the city.

The rooms are bright and vibrant. And the hostel has a welcoming atmosphere that natures a sense of community. This Copenhagen hostel prides itself on being funky and functional.

For you, travelers who fear the dreaded hostel bathrooms, fear not. All the bathrooms were redone just a couple of years ago.

There’s an optional organic breakfast buffet. Or you can save money by cooking your own breakfast in the kitchen.

What others are saying about Annex Copenhagen!

“Loved this place, it was a great experience. When we checked in, our room was ready and they upgraded our room with an ensuite. Great location, close to food and bars. Also had a bar attached. Friendly people at reception and the bar. Easy walk to the main area and free walking tour.”

“Annex Copenhagen was an annex for Absalon Hotel, which was a four star hotel and very close to the central station. All the facilities at Absalon, such as the kitchen, pool table, mini golf, common area, bar, etc. were available for use by Annex guests. The Annex itself was a two star hotel and the rooms were nice and clean. Would definitely stay here again.”

Woodah Hostel

With excellent cleanliness, and a superb staff the fact that Woodah Hostel is one of the best in Copenhagen shouldn’t come as a surprise. The hostel has a big, eco-friendly heart.

Getting to Woodha Hostel

The hostel sits in the Vesterbro. One of the coolest areas of Copenhagen.

What Makes Woodha one of the best hostels in Copenhagen?

Woodah has a different mindset from many of the other hostels on this list. Woodah hostel has the dream of sustainable travel. The hostel has a focus on organic living. (they serve a mean organic breakfast For FREE).

The wooden bunk beds are custom made and provide a lot of privacy. Woodah supports local, organic, and fair trade products.

Woodah offers yoga mats and equipment free of charge. If the weather in Copenhagen is nice then they also offer free yoga classes in the yard.

Woodah is a quaint, and relaxing hostel. There is a craft brewery right across the street. And while they do have a bar, this isn’t a party hostel.

Rather this is a great place to stay for a personal experience, and for those who want a relaxing night. It’s a great base for intrepid travelers who would rather spend their time sightseeing rather than nursing a hangover.

What Other Travelers are Saying About Woodah Hostel?

“ Lovely and cute small hostel. Stayed here one night, the beds felt private and warm, and had a little curtain to close for full privacy. The mattress I was on wasn’t the most comfy in comparison to other hostels I’d been to, but I didn’t mind for one night. The breakfast was very nice! Warm bread, spreads, muesli and yogurt, fruits, and coffee. The hostel was a quick 6 min walk from central station for metro access. Would stay here again for a quick stay!”

“In the dorms, you have access to a personal storage box (bring your own padlock or buy from the staff), and the bunk beds are equipped with curtains for increased privacy. The common areas are very cozily decorated and good for hanging out in, and the bathroom and showers are clean. The hostel itself is only a few minutes walk from the central train station which was perfect for me as I was only stopping by on my way back from the Faroe Islands, and was continuing by train the next morning.”

Generator Copenhagen

Generator is one of the most popular hostel chains spread around Europe. And it has finally made it’s way to Copenhagen.

I’ve stayed in Generator hostels from Dublin to Venice and have always had a great timein thier hostels. Though they are known for being large and loud. So those seeking peace and quiet might want to look elsewhere.

Getting to Generator Copenhagen

I’ve stayed in Generator hostels from Dublin to Venice and have always had a great timein thier hostels. Though they are known for being large and loud. So those seeking peace and quiet might want to look elsewhere.

Generator Copenhagen is located right outside Kongens Nytorv, the largest square in the city. As the hostel says, “you are a hop, skip and a jump from everything the city has to offer”.

What Makes Woodha one of the best hostels in Copenhagen?

Hands down, Generator Copenhagen might be my favorite generator hostel. Other than Generator Venice, (where I met my wife, of course). The hostel has won numerous awards such as the best hostel in Denmark in 2016.

The hostel’s prime location lets you quickly whip around the city on foot and bike; and you can easily see most of the things Copenhagen offers. The hostel has a buzzing bar, lounge, and it’s a great spot for nightly drinks and entertainment.

They also have low prices and a variety of dorm options.

What Other Travelers are Saying About Generator Copenhagen Hostel

“This was my first stay in a hostel and boy was it a shock by the time I got to my next hostel... this place is above and beyond. Great facilities and great, modern, clean rooms. Spotless but still homey. There is a bar and an ice bar but you can’t hear much noise in the rooms. Great location! I am so impressed, it had an upscale hotel feel rather than a hostel.”

“My favorite hostel I’ve stayed in so far. The atmosphere is very cool with lots of stuff to do and a great location within 20 minute max walking distance of every main attraction in Copenhagen. The bed was also super comfortable and had wonderful sleep in them”

Globalhagen Hostel

Globalhagen’s a truly special Copenhagen hostel. It has an inspiring mission, that lets you help others at no added cost to you!

Where is Globalhagen Copenhagen Hostel

If the multicultural area of Nørrebro appeals to you then Globalhagen Hostel is another of the best hostels in Copenhagen.

What Sets GlobalHagen Apart

For one thing the story. Globalhagen Hostel is entirely designed and built by volunteers! And the hostel is a nonprofit! How crazy is that? Part of your room fee goes straight towards supporting projects in various countries around the world. Globalhagen has an emphasis on bettering human rights. The rooms are named after the countries in which they have projects.

More than just helping to make the planet a better place, Globalhagen Hostel has a strong focus on equality. The hostel is all about accepting everyone for who they are, no matter race, gender, sexuality, or age. Globalhagen wants to build, as well as strengthen, a strong community.

The hostel is eco-friendly and most food and beverages that are served are fair trade.

And while they have a bar, this isn’t a party hostel. Rather it’s a more relaxed and chill vibe to it.

What Backpackers Are Saying About Globalhagen

“I enjoyed my stay here. The atmosphere was really chill and there were no problems. There is a bar and kitchen and the staff were all polite. Not far from city centre and there are a load of bars and restaurants in the immediate area. Would definitely recommend”

“The hostel is a cool and friendly place, ideal to spend time with friends over a coffee or listening to music. Staff is great and includes super nice people from all over the world, volunteering for this ngo. Rooms and toilets are clean, the kitchen is well furnished and the dining room spacious. They don't provide bed linen and towels but you can bring them with you or rent them and the place is worth it!”

“I really enjoyed the stay here at Bedwood. The staff was extremely kind, welcoming, and happy to offer advice. The breakfast in the morning was quite good and the common area is a great spot to chill out and enjoy conversation with the other people there. Only complaint is my room was quite small, with all of the beds being very close together. It wasn’t a problem because of how friendly and clean the common areas are.”

“:Great location, Building, superb Staff and atmosphere. Only a few showers and toilets for the whole building and they are not very clean. Facilities in the room (Room 13): Not enough working power sockets to even power the lights for the beds and the personal curtain for more privacy at my bed was missing. Also a lot of noise from the bar/common area through the night ! Use the free earplugs when in room 13. The room was not always locked properly so everyone could get in.”

Danhostel Copenhagen Bellahøj

Don’t be confused, as I am not repeating myself from the Danhostel earlier on this list. Our second Danhostels is another viable choice for Copenhagen hostel goers.

Where is Danhostel Copenhagen Bellahøj

Our second Danhostel of the day is located in Bellahøj, which is a little bit farther outside the city. However, this Copenhagen hostel makes for a great place for peace and quiet. It takes around 15 -30 minutes to get to the famous “Strøget” pedestrian street in the downtown area.

Why is Danhostel Copenhagen Bellahøj One of the Best Places to Stay in Copenhagen?

Well, it’s laid back vibe, low price, and homely charm. Danhostel Copenhagen Bellahøj has green and peaceful surroundings. The hostel’s sites are located nearby a beautiful park.

They have a lot of extra perks that make it a superb place to stay. They have table tennis, video games, gardens, places to barbecue a TV room, and places to park. This has free WiFi because we aren’t living in the 90s.

Overall, the hostel is great value and offers excellent facilities and security. The biggest downside is the location.

What Backpackers Are Saying About Danhostel Copenhagen Bellahøj

“Really clean hostel, spacious dorms. Not too far from city (30min bus journey to Central Station). River and seating area right outside which was nice. Good value for money. Only thing was there wasn’t any shops or somewhere to grab some food nearby.”

“I'd been in the city hostels for a bit and fancied this as a break from Saturday night in town. It's a really long haul to walk there from town but I did it and the lake that greeted me at sundown made it all worthwhile. This Danhostel is perfectly located for a lovely park and lake and has easy 24 hour access for smokers and insomniacs 😛 Plenty of machines to buy cheap drinks from but make sure to have plenty of coinage with you for that. Lovely TV lounge that has a hotel feel.”

Kirsten Room in Apartment

Okay, our last place is Kirsten Room in an Apartment. Located in downtown Copenhagen, just 3 minutes from Copenhagen’s Inner Lakes.

What makes Kirsten Room in Apartment Special?

So Kirsten Room isn’t so much a hostel as a private room in an apartment. Perfect for couples this hostel has everything you need. And a great escape from crowded hostels. There TV, Internet, and a fridge.

The downside is that is located on the 4th floor. It’s also not budget-friendly.

What Others Are Saying?

Everything was fantastic. Great location, hostess and the room is big and very hygge.”

“Perfect stay at Kirsten! Good value of money, perfect location. Kirsten makes sure that you feel comfortable and everything is ready for your stay.”
